Animal Head Jars with Hilary Rochow

Join ceramic artist Hilary Rochow for a hands-on pottery workshop and learn how to hand-build an animal head jar from start to finish. Hilary is known for creating expressive animal forms in clay that both emote and captivate. Her functional ceramic pieces feature simple drawings and sculptural forms inspired by nature, each full of personality.

In this handbuilding pottery workshop at The Clay Department in San Antonio, students will learn basic slab-building and sculpting techniques to create a finished ceramic jar with a lid. The form is inspired by the canopic jars of ancient Egypt, but the piece you create will be entirely your own. Hilary will guide you through every step of the process, leaving you with a one-of-a-kind handmade ceramic piece. What you choose to store inside when you take it home is up to you.

What You'll Learn

  • How to slab build a small ceramic jar with a fitted lid
  • Animal face sculpting techniques for expressive clay forms
  • The history of the ceremonial canopic jars that inspired these designs

This pottery class is open to all skill levels. Beginners are welcome, though students with a little clay experience may find the smaller sculptural details easier to create.

Date: August 8

Time: 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM

Whether you're looking for a unique pottery class in San Antonio, want to improve your handbuilding skills, or simply enjoy creating with clay, this workshop is a fun and creative experience for all.
