Looking for a ceramic sculpture class in San Antonio? Join ceramic artist Hilary Rochow for a two-day hands-on sculpture intensive at The Clay Department.

Hilary is known for her vivid ceramic sculptures of animal limbs, appendages, and natural forms. In this workshop, she’ll teach you how to take a lump of clay and turn it into a detailed, naturalistic sculpture inspired by the world around you.

This is a hands-on ceramic sculpture workshop focused on observation, form, texture, and detail. You’ll learn how to look at a natural object, break it down into its essential shapes, and use your hands and specialized tools to recreate those forms in clay.

Hilary will bring a selection of natural reference objects from her personal collection, but you’re also encouraged to bring a small natural object of your own to work from. Think shells, bones, rocks, seed pods, plants, or other interesting little pieces of the natural world.

You’ll spend two days working closely with Hilary and developing techniques you can take back to your own ceramic practice.

Who Is This Class For?

This ceramic sculpture workshop is designed for intermediate and advanced students who already have some experience working with clay. It is a great fit for ceramic artists looking to improve their sculpting skills, work more realistically from observation, or add more detail and texture to their work.

What Should I Bring?

Bring a small natural object that you’d be excited to sculpt if you have one. Hilary will also provide reference objects, so you don’t need to bring anything if you don’t have something in mind.

Specialized sculpting tools will be provided for use during the workshop.
