4-Week Beginner Wheel Throwing Class: What to Expect
Overview
Welcome to your introduction to wheel throwing! Over four weeks, you’ll learn the core skills of working on the pottery wheel; from centering clay to creating, trimming, and glazing your own pieces. This class is all about learning by doing, so come ready to get your hands (and clothes!) a little messy.
Week 1: Getting Centered
Focus: Centering & Basic Cylinders
What to Expect:
- Learn how to prepare your clay and set up your wheel
- Practice centering clay- the foundation of all wheel throwing
- Work on forming simple cylinders to understand clay control and balance
- Don’t expect to keep pieces this week, it’s all about practice and getting comfortable with the clay and wheel
Goal: Build confidence and control while learning how to center and shape basic forms.
Week 2: Pulling & Shaping
Focus: Cylinders, Pulling Walls, and Form Development
What to Expect:
- Continue practicing centering and forming cylinders
- Learn how to pull up walls evenly and create height and thickness control
- Begin experimenting with shaping your cylinders into forms like cups or small vases
Goal: Create several cylinders or simple vessels you’ll keep for trimming next week.
Week 3: Trimming & Finishing
Focus: Refining Your Pieces
What to Expect:
- Learn when your pieces are ready to trim (leather-hard stage)
- Use trimming tools to refine bases, shape profiles, and remove excess clay
- Add finishing touches, such as carving or smoothing surfaces
Goal: Prepare your best pieces for bisque firing and glazing.
Week 4: Glaze Day!
Focus: Glazing & Finishing Touches
What to Expect:
- Learn how to choose and apply glaze
- Explore different glaze colors and finishes
- Review the firing process and what to expect when your final pieces are ready
Goal: Complete your first glazed and finished pottery pieces to take home!
