Water Carving with Ryan Mckerley
April 4 2026 • 11:00am - 4:00pm
In this hands on ceramics workshop, participants will explore Ryan’s signature Wax and Water Carving techniques to create dynamic surfaces and expressive forms in clay. Students will learn how to apply painted wax patterns to greenware and use controlled water carving to reveal layered textures and movement. This surface design technique is suitable for both functional pottery and sculptural work, making it a versatile approach for ceramic artists interested in expanding their surface vocabulary. Participants are encouraged to bring three to four bone dry, unfired greenware pieces with walls approximately half an inch thick to allow for carving and sponging. Additional porcelain greenware tiles or cups will be provided for experimentation. This workshop is ideal for intermediate to advanced students looking to explore innovative surface techniques in ceramic art and midrange porcelain or smooth clay bodies.
Student Tool List
• Brushes in a variety of sizes for applying slip, underglaze, and hot wax
Note: Brushes used for hot wax cannot be reused for other materials
• Xacto knives
• One large rectangular or oval sponge
• Four to five bone dry greenware pots or tiles
Smooth clay bodies are highly recommended for this technique. Best results are achieved with Awesome Possum from Armadillo Clay, Pecos, Columbine, or Cashmere from New Mexico Clay, and B Mix from Laguna Clay. These clays hold up well during sponging and firing and are less prone to cracking. Domestic porcelains and earthenwares may be used but tend to crack during the carving or firing process. Clay bodies containing grog or sand can create interesting textures but also have a higher risk of cracking.
